Employment Applications

Many job seekers miss out on job interview opportunities by failing to fill out their employment applications correctly. As a general rule, the more specialized and competitive the position, the more carefully all job application materials will be scrutinized.

Sure, you may have had turned in a less-than-perfect application in the past and had the good luck of being hired.

However, during slow economic times, the available workers begin to outnumber available positions, and employers can afford to be more and more choosy about who they select.

Give yourself a leading edge over the competition by spending the extra time to do it right.

First impressions do matter!

Purpose of the Job Application

Employment applications serve different functions to different employers. At the very least, they collect basic information about each applicant that is necessary to process job-related paperwork such as new hire reporting, and payroll and tax forms. Additionally, some employers may use this information to track and report hiring trends for federal, state, or company purposes.

Finally, many employers use the information to compare and screen out applicants. If you are applying for a highly competitive or specialized position, you can expect this to be the norm. It is simply the most effective way for hiring managers to whittle down the list of thousands of applicants to a handful of the best to be interviewed.

The Screening Out Process

Your job correspondence materials tell the hiring manager more about your performance potential that you may think. Beyond the required education and experience, most companies are looking for people who pay attention to detail, can follow instructions, and are willing to complete all job-related tasks, including unpleasant ones.

You can score big in these categories from the start by understanding that the way you fill out your employment applications reflects your ability to outperform others in these areas. Consider your paperwork to be your first “job” for the employer - show them you take pride in yourself and your work by thoroughly and completely addressing each question they’ve presented you with.

To polish your materials even more, make sure you always include a resume and cover letter with all your employment applications (back to the top), even if you are applying for jobs that don’t traditionally require them! Remember – first impressions do count!
